Call them the "Railroad Chinese," "The Invisible Spikes," or the "Army of Canton," but the Chinese built the railroad, and the railroad built America.
"Chinese Brothers, American Sons" is an historical novel about two adventurous brothers Li Chang and Li Yu who leave their families in China and arrive on America's shore on a death ship in 1854 in search of Gold Mountain. Exploring their hardships and an unrelenting discrimination and, yes, their joys and sorrows and their unwavering bond with each other, they grow to love for America even as they face the constant pull to return to China, to the families they continue to support financially. Throw in a few Chinese food references, some preaching from a Confucian pulpit and a dash of a love story and you have "Chinese Brothers, American Sons." As to the Chinese railroad workers, I am grateful to have the chance to give a voice to those whose labor on the Transcontinental Railroad helped to shape the physical and social landscape of the American West. |
